NITV presenter nominated for global award
National Indigenous Affairs Editor at NITV John Paul Janke has been nominated for the World Indigenous Broadcasters Network (WIBN) Journalism Excellence Award.
One of six finalists, John Paul is recognised for the powerful episode of NITV/SBS news and current affairs program The Point – I Am Not My Addiction which aired on NITV last year.
Filmed in Meanjin (Brisbane) the episode explored addiction and how it impacts First Nations communities and families and the search for culturally driven solutions.
Honoured to be nominated
“Hearing firsthand from people courageous enough to share how they’re rebuilding their lives, and the vital role of strong support networks in navigating addiction, was really inspiring,” John Paul Janke said.
“Their stories provide a critical insight into how trauma, disconnection and a lack of culturally safe services can drive addiction in Indigenous communities.
“I’m honoured to be nominated for this award alongside such esteemed Indigenous journalists who share my commitment to truth-telling and to reporting grounded in culture and community.”
The winner will be announced in September at the WIBN Conference in Norway.
