Expansion strengthens support for Aboriginal Heritage Surveys

The WA Government is continuing its commitment to responsible resource exploration in Western Australia by expanding its Aboriginal Heritage Survey Assistance Program.

Introduced in 2023-24, the initiative helps offset the costs associated with Aboriginal heritage surveys undertaken by prospectors and explorers.

These surveys are critical for identifying Aboriginal heritage values and ensuring they are considered throughout exploration activities.

Rebate entitlements remain available for up to 100 per cent of annual rent for prospecting licences and up to 50 per cent for exploration licences.

The 50 per cent exploration rebate will now be retained for the full five-year term, rather than reducing to 25 per cent from 1 July 2026.

“We will continue to work with industry, communities, and Traditional Owners to uphold best-practice standards and ensure exploration is conducted responsibly across the State.”

Practical assistance

By maintaining the full rebate, the Cook Labor Government is encouraging ongoing exploration investment, supporting collaboration with Aboriginal communities and providing greater certainty for proponents meeting their obligations under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972.

Early program data indicates eligible tenement holders are accessing the rebate to support survey activity across a range of exploration and prospecting licences. This demonstrates the initiative is providing practical assistance where it is most needed.

The program is funded through repurposed mining lease rental refunds and has dedicated resources to ensure timely administration, including additional staff to manage applications and assist applicants.

The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration has updated its guidelines to give applicants clear information on eligibility, application processes, and reporting requirements.
