Darren McCallum wins national children’s literature award

August 20, 2025

Darwin-based artist and author Darren McCallum has won the Early Childhood Book of the Year award at the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) for his debut title, The Wobbly Bike.

Announced yesterday, the award recognises excellence in children’s literature and highlights the growing role of First Nations creators in reshaping Australia’s publishing landscape.

McCallum, a proud Larrakia man and father of three, drew inspiration for the book from his daughter Summer’s determination to learn to ride. The illustrated story centres on resilience and joy while showcasing scenes of Darwin life, including coastal landscapes and local families.

Inclusive representation is central to the book. Children of different cultural backgrounds and abilities are featured, reflecting McCallum’s commitment to ensuring every child “sees themselves on the page”.

Our stories belong in every classroom, every home. Winning this award proves the appetite is there

To safeguard cultural accuracy, McCallum worked closely with Larrakia Elder Richard Fejo. Fejo described the book as “a story with heart, grounded in Country and respectful of our community’s traditions”.

The CBCA judges praised the book for its vibrant illustrations and engaging narrative. “It is a story of persistence told with warmth, and its imagery reflects the diversity of modern Australia,” the panel said.

Bookshop Darwin reported strong local sales since the award announcement, with educators expressing interest in including it in school literacy programs.

McCallum said he hopes his work inspires other Indigenous authors and illustrators.

“Our stories belong in every classroom, every home. Winning this award proves the appetite is there,” he said.

The CBCA awards, established in 1946, are considered the most prestigious in Australian children’s publishing. Previous winners include acclaimed authors such as Mem Fox and Shaun Tan.

Industry analysts say McCallum’s recognition represents growing momentum for First Nations-led storytelling across genres, supported by new grants and mentorship programs in the sector.
