NAIDOC Week 2026 officially begins today, running until July 12 under the historic theme “50 Years of Deadly”. The milestone celebrates five decades of the national week-long movement acknowledging the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

National NAIDOC Awards Finalists:
The National NAIDOC Committee announced finalists across 10 categories, including nominees for Lifetime Achievement (posthumous, Rhoda Roberts AO), Person of the Year (Aunty Pat Turner AO, Dr Lana Leslie-Henfling OAM, Timmy Duggan OAM), and Elder of the Year awards. Winners will be announced in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) on 15 August 2026.

Major Community Events:
Opening ceremonies have taken place, with highlights including the Perth (Boorloo) ceremony at Wellington Square and various local events across Victoria. The National NAIDOC Event Portal allows for searching local, regional, and national celebrations.

Policy & Advocacy Context:
Advocates highlight that while celebrating, critical work continues, with only four of 19 Closing the Gap targets on track. Additionally, the National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People’s independent statutory powers officially took effect this week.
