Community mourns loss of ‘beloved storyteller’

Western Australia’s Midwest is in mourning after the passing of storyteller and renowned academic Charmaine Paperback Green Smith.

Dr Papertalk Green Smith passed away on Wednesday on Noongar Boodja “surrounded by her loving family”, according to a statement released by the family.

A celebrated artist, Dr Papertalk Green Smith was passionate about the region’s unique culture.

In a written statement, her family said Dr Papertalk Green Smith would inspire generations to come.

Inspiration to her community

“Dr Papertalk Green Smith was a celebrated poet, writer, artist and community leader whose work and advocacy touched many across Australia and beyond,” the statement read.

“Her spirit, strength and creativity will continue to inspire future generations.

“Charmaine will now return to rest with her Wajarri and Badimaya ancestors, her spirit forever belonging to Yamaji Barna.”
