Pilbara safe house refurbished with $755,000 grant
A crisis accommodation service provider in the Pilbara town of Roebourne has recently completed refurbishment of a safe house for women and children with a $755,784 grant from the State Government.
The government-owned property is leased and operated by Mawarnkarra Health Service for the benefit of the local and surrounding community.
“This refurbished facility provides a safe, secure, well-appointed and culturally appropriate place to stay for women and children in the region who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or escaping domestic violence,” Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch said.
The safe house provides supported accommodation for women and accompanying children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness due to domestic violence or other crises.
As well as a full refurbishment, the funding supported the addition of a new bedroom for overnight staff accommodation at the four-bedroom property, which also includes communal bathrooms, kitchen, dining, living and laundry rooms.
Mawarnkarra provides holistic and culturally appropriate services to support the health and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Roebourne and surrounding areas.
The grant is part of the Cook Government’s record $5.8 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021.
