Suicide prevention campaign launches in Victoria
A new suicide prevention campaign in Victoria aims to strengthen the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by encouraging early conversations and culturally safe support.
Connection is Prevention: Just Have the Yarn urges people to recognise warning signs, speak up early and reach out to those who may be struggling.
Supported by a range of media assets including a short film and posters the campaign is encourages communities to check in with family and friends.
“This is a critical time of year for our Communities, when our social and emotional wellbeing can be heavily impacted by the additional pressures from the holiday period,” Ms Perry-Peters, Director at the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation’s (VACCHO’s), said.
“As well as the grief that can resurface when we’re reminded that loved ones may no longer be here.”
The launch has been timed with the rollout of BLKTRX, a new online service directory designed to help First Nations people in Victoria find culturally safe services to assist in their wellbeing.
The BLKTRX rollout is Victoria’s first Aboriginal online mental health service directory.
Community-led initiative
It collates information about support services into a single, easy to use accessible platform.
Ms Perry-Peters said BLKTRX represented a Community-led initiative that supported self-determination, strengthens choice and improves access to trusted services.
“These resources, including the new BLKTRX directory, are the start of a suite of resources to help Mob feel confident to reach out for support,” she said.
“A simple yarn, a check-in, or a moment of connection can make all the difference; because connection is prevention.”
The campaign forms part of VACCHO’s broader work to strengthen Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing across the State.
