New children’s book puts kids and culture at centre field

April 29, 2026

A new children’s picture book by Ngiyampaa and Wiradjuri man Taylor Hampton and his wife Jacinta Daniher has brought First Nations culture and AFL together through story, sport and identity.

Titled ‘My Dreamtime Match’, it is the couple’s third picture book and follows the success of their most recent release, ‘Our Dance’.

Key Points

  • New picture book by Taylor Hampton and Jacinta Daniher released
  • Follows Yorta Yorta boy Jahleel in Sir Doug Nicholls Round
  • Focuses on culture in a contemporary AFL setting for children
  • Features guernsey by Aunty Neva Takale with permission
  • Includes AFL greats Michael O’Loughlin and Adam Goodes by consent
  • Illustrations by Noongar and Sicilian artist Janelle Burger

The book centres on a young Yorta Yorta boy named Jahleel as he takes part in the Sir Doug Nicholls Round. The narrative celebrates the contribution of First Nations culture to AFL while connecting community, family and Country.

Hampton said the concept arose from the couple’s shared passion for the game and a commitment to place culture in a contemporary context.

He noted that while their first two books focused on traditional practices such as painting, showing artifacts and dancing, this new title emphasises culture “in today’s world.” Hampton also linked AFL to the traditional game of Marngrook, saying the story aims to show that culture can be celebrated in any aspect.

The story draws on real people, clubs and community connections. Hampton said the goal is to ensure the narrative reflects lived experience and allows children to see themselves represented across different contexts.

He said they want children to imagine themselves in the story and to see diversity across skin tones as part of the book’s inclusive message.

Designs, permissions and on-field symbols

‘My Dreamtime Match’ features the guernsey design originally created by Wollithiga Bangerang woman Aunty Neva Takale, included with permission. Hampton said the guernsey became central to the story and he also incorporated his own design from the Beechworth Football Netball Club.

The book includes illustrated appearances from AFL greats Michael O’Loughlin and Adam Goodes, after permission was granted to use their likeness. Hampton described securing their endorsement as a dream come true.

Noongar and Sicilian artist Janelle Burger illustrates the book, continuing her collaboration with the authors after working on ‘Our Dance’. Hampton said Burger was keen to return for the third title, with her artwork helping to bring the on-field and community scenes to life.

Family on the page

The couple’s children, Ella and Arlo, also appear in the book, extending a pattern of embedding family into each story. Hampton said his own childhood experiences — growing up without strong cultural representation — informed the project. He reflected that having a book like this when he was young would have strengthened his identity.
