Ley slams Albanese’s lack of action over growing Indigenous issues
Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has joined the criticism of the Federal government’s ‘inaction’ since the failed Voice referendum, accusing the PM of shying away from the many issues Indigenous Australians face.
Ms Ley, who was in Kimberley on the weekend, said the latest plan for economic reforms and growth, as highlighted by Mr Albanese at the Garma Festival on Saturday, showed how the government was failing.
“This is the fourth year of an Albanese government and we’re seeing these critical indicators go backwards, that is not good enough,” Ms Ley told the Sunday Times.
“The scale of the challenges in Indigenous Australia are much bigger than the scale of the response that I have heard from Prime Minister Albanese today.
“We have 19 indicators in Closing the Gap — four of those are going backwards and what really concerns me is that they are indicating a lack of progress, in fact, a retreat in critical areas relating to children and education and youth incarceration.”
Ms Ley has been in WA’s north meeting Indigenous leaders in Kununnuna, Wyndham and Broome.
