First Nations group awarded Rivercare grant

The Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association are among 14 community groups awarded a combined total more than $655,000 in funding to assist with the improvement of waterway health in the Swan Canning Catchment in Western Australia.

The State government funding will enable the groups to progress projects including weed control, foreshore revegetation, and wetland restoration across key locations.

The grants deliver on the State Government’s priority to protect and restore our rivers and waterways for future generations.

Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association Incorporated was awarded $96,940 to promote natural regeneration through weed control, aimed at improving the waterway health of the Mandoon Bilya (Helena River).

In its ninth-year, the program continues to deliver positive outcomes by supporting the local knowledge and experience of volunteer groups.

“Safeguarding the Swan and Canning rivers remains a key priority for the Government,” Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn said.

“Each project funded through the Community Rivercare Program contributes to a healthier, more resilient Swan Canning Catchment for current and future generations.

“Congratulations to all successful grant recipients and I look forward to seeing the positive environmental outcomes their projects will deliver.”
