Earthquake rattles outback near NT-SA border

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck the outback on the Northern Territory–South Australian border early today, according to Geoscience Australia.

The tremor occurred around 4.30am (AEST), with the epicentre recorded south of Yulara, a township near Uluṟu and south-west of Alice Springs. There are no early reports of damage.

Beyonce Matthew said some guests woke up to the rumbling.

“It was only for a few minutes,” she told AAP.

She said the shaking was apparent but did not cause items to fall.

She added that the early-morning movement caught some people by surprise.

At Sails In The Desert Hotel, staff working overnight described a short period of shaking that did not dislodge items. The account emphasised that the movement was brief and that only a few guests reported waking due to the tremor.
