Queensland Child Protection Inquiry Sparks Outcry
Advocates have issued strong warnings regarding a newly released Queensland Commission of Inquiry into Child Safety report. The inquiry revealed that the number of children in State residential care has tripled over the past decade. However, Indigenous advocates argue that the report’s 52 recommendations—particularly a proposal to lift cultural restrictions on adoption to establish it as a “third permanency pathway”—directly contradict expert and lived-experience evidence. Critics warn this shifts away from the Child Placement Principle, which prioritises keeping Aboriginal children with kin or within their communities.
