Call for a national Truth Telling and Healing Commission

March 12, 2026

The Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders-in-Council have launched a petition calling for a national, independent First Nations-led truth telling and healing commission.

The launch of the petition follows the failure of the 2022 Voice Referendum, and the rise in racism against the First Nations community.

“The historical truths of the establishment of the nation of Australia such as First Nations genocide, dispossession, over-incarceration, forced assimilation and ongoing discrimination have not yet been recognised,” the council members said.

“Our petition will change that.

“We witnessed, on 31 August 2025, the violent attack on Camp Sovereignty following the March for Australia rallies, followed by the alleged act of terrorism targeting First Nations people on 26 January in Perth.

“These events reveal the deep, overt racism, reminding us just how urgently our nation needs First Nations-led historical truth-telling.”

“These violent attacks and alleged acts of terrorism cause intergenerational harm, and continued suffering of First Nations people.

“Through genuine, national-led truth-telling, we can finally give all Australians the opportunity to understand the truths of our country.

Request to Senate

“To complement the Walk for Truth that will commence in April and arrive in Canberra in May, we call on the Australian Senate to establish a national, independent First nations-led Truth-Telling and Healing Commission.”

Rh council was created in 1993 as a cultural organisation/body for preserving, recording, communicating, and teaching communities the culture and language of the Goenpul [Goren-pul], Ngugi [Noog-ee] and Noonuccal [Noo–knuckle] Traditional Owners of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Isiand) and Moorgumpin (Moreton Bay).
