Major Indigenous news in Australia today centres on a massive land conservation milestone in the Northern Territory and a Native Title handover in the Torres Strait.
Simpson Desert Indigenous Protected Area (IPA):
The Australian government announced the protection of over 4.7 million hectares in the Northern Territory’s Simpson Desert. Managed by the Central Land Council in partnership with Traditional Owners, this addition pushes Australia’s total protected landmass to 25 per cent.

Native Title Handover:
Traditional Owners in the Torres Strait celebrated the handover of islands, marking a significant realization of Native Title rights and continued self-determination for First Nations communities.
Ongoing NAIDOC Week Events:
Following the recent celebrations, communities continue to highlight First Nations culture. For example, the Gold Coast’s Kalwun Development Corporation reported a record-breaking NAIDOC program, and emergency service groups like the CFA are wrapping up localised “campfire connection” events.

Tasmanian Federal Electorate:
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) proposed naming a new federal electorate seat after 19th-century Indigenous resistance hero Tongerlongeter. The proposal has drawn attention to the need for broader community consultation with local groups like the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre.
