Gold medallist Cathy Freeman has been heralded for her social impact in advancing reconciliation and her glittering athletic career at an investiture ceremony in Canberra.

Governor-General Sam Mostyn presented Freeman with a medal as a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), the nation’s highest civilian honour, at the ceremony at Government House.

Freeman, who won the Australian of the Year award in 1998, is famously known for securing gold in the 400-metre final at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Since hanging up her running shoes in 2003, Freeman has established a foundation that boosts educational outcomes for remote First Nations children and their families.

“Catherine Freeman is one of Australia’s most revered athletes and an enduring symbol of excellence, leadership and inspiration,” the governor-general’s secretary Gerard Martin said as Freeman welled up.

“Her achievements on the world stage, including her unforgettable Olympic triumph in Sydney, have shaped our nation’s sporting identity.”

“Catherine has remained deeply engaged in advancing positive social impact, contributing to organisations dedicated to youth, community well-being, and a future for Australian sport.”

Mr Martin added she continues to inspire others with her commitment to unity, inclusion and reconciliation.

Freeman became the first First Nations Australian to win an individual Olympic gold medal, while also claiming a silver medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics along with Commonwealth Games and World Championships wins.

Ms Mostyn thanked all recipients for their contributions to Australia.

“Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do every day, making us a better and better country,” she said.
