Next-gen Aboriginal leaders to shine in Illuminate program
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students from across the Hunter region of NSW are set to take part in a three-day challenge this week, designed to spark ideas, build confidence and develop leadership.
From today (September 16), students in Years 8–10 will gather at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus to reimagine what a culturally informed visitor experience could look like for the community.
The challenge is part of Illuminate, a national program run in partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. (AECG) and the University.

Already successful on the Central Coast, this is the first time Illuminate will be delivered in the Hunter, tailored specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, many of whom are already leaders on junior AECG committees.
Design solutions
Across three days, students will work in teams to identify opportunities, design solutions and bring their ideas to life – before pitching them to an audience of peers, mentors and community leaders.
Supported by teachers, community mentors and the University’s Wollotuka Institute – recently recognised with a national Australian Financial Review award – students will not only strengthen their entrepreneurial skills but also deepen their connection to higher education and pathways for the future.
The event will culminate in a student showcase and awards ceremony, celebrating the creativity and leadership of the next generation.
