Record AFL deal a ‘powerful message’ to young Indigenous players
AFL star Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is set to remain at St Kilda after signing a new two-year deal, becoming the AFL’s first player to earn $2 million per season.
And the deal has seen AFL legend and Indigenous mentor Chris Johnson called it a powerful message to young Aboriginal footballers nationwide.
“It sends a powerful message to young Aboriginal footballers across the country: hard work in state academies and AFL Indigenous programs can lead to elite-level careers – and the rewards that come with them,” Johnson said on NITV.
“He’s an elite player who thrives in confined spaces, delivers precise handballs and kicks, and constantly involves his teammates,” Johnson said.

“When he has a strong presence on the field, St Kilda usually wins.
“Players like Nasiah give the next generation something to aim for. We can leverage their success to create real pathways to elite football.”
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, from South Australia, is the nephew of former Port Adelaide and Essendon legend Gavin Wanganeen, and the stepson of former St Kilda player Terry Milera.
He was drafted in the 2021 AFL draft at pick number 11 overall.
