Stolen wages scam warning

August 6, 2025

Indigenous people due to get compensation through WA’s stolen wages settlement are being warned to avoid scammers.

Eligible claimants were told last week by the company dispersing the funds that details will come via post or email, and that compensation will be paid automatically after 21 days.

Consumer Protection spokesperson Natasha Pirrottina told the ABC scammers have already begin to swoop on the windfall.

One scam involves social media posts offering to expedite claims for a fee of $300.

The Federal Court approved a $180 million stolen wages class action settlement put forward by the Western Australian government in October last year.
