NAIDOC Awards moved to August for 50-Year milestone
The National NAIDOC Committee has confirmed a one-off schedule change for its flagship awards, shifting the 2026 ceremony to August 15 in Mparntwe/Alice Springs.
NAIDOC Week will proceed as planned from July 5-12 under the theme “Fifty Years of Deadly.”
Key Points
- 2026 National NAIDOC Awards moved to August 15 in Mparntwe/Alice Springs
- NAIDOC Week remains July 5-12 with “Fifty Years of Deadly” theme
- Awards traditionally occur on the Saturday of NAIDOC Week
- Committee says change best reflects the milestone’s significance
- Finalists still announced during NAIDOC Week in early July
- Winners revealed at the August ceremony in Mparntwe
- Committee thanks nominees, finalists, sponsors, partners, volunteers and communities
Announcing the change, the committee said moving the awards out of NAIDOC Week would provide the best opportunity to stage an event that matches the significance of the 50th anniversary and brings people together. The National NAIDOC Awards, traditionally held on the Saturday of NAIDOC Week, will mark this landmark year with a later ceremony in the heart of Central Australia.
National NAIDOC Committee co-chair Steven Satour described the occasion as a major moment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the country, emphasising a celebration that enables people to gather and acknowledge excellence.
“Fifty Years of Deadly is a remarkable milestone for NAIDOC and for our communities,” he said.
“The Committee wants to ensure this celebration is delivered in a way that reflects the significance of the occasion and provides the opportunity for people from across the country to come together and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence.”
According to the committee, the rescheduling is intended to ensure the ceremony fully reflects the historic nature of the anniversary. The framing of the celebration around a unifying national gathering is consistent with the theme and the committee’s stated focus on elevating the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
What remains during NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week will continue in its usual early July timeslot under the theme “Fifty Years of Deadly.” The committee has retained key elements of the awards cycle within NAIDOC Week itself, confirming that finalists for the National NAIDOC Awards will still be announced during that period. The winners will then be unveiled at the ceremony on August 15.
The timeline for 2026 is as follows:
- NAIDOC Week: July 5-12
- Theme: “Fifty Years of Deadly”
- Traditional awards timing: Saturday of NAIDOC Week
- 2026 awards ceremony: August 15 in Mparntwe/Alice Springs
- Finalists announced during NAIDOC Week
- Winners revealed at the August 15 ceremony
The committee presented the adjusted schedule as a practical step to host a ceremony that honours five decades of celebration while preserving the familiar rhythm of NAIDOC Week. By splitting the finalist announcement and the awards night, organisers maintain the momentum of July’s national focus while creating additional space in August for an expanded, milestone-centred event.
“The Committee is committed to ensuring this anniversary is celebrated in a way that reflects its significance and honours the generations of people who have contributed to the NAIDOC journey,” Aunty Lynette Riley, National NAIDOC Committee co-chair said.
